Send a fax via FritzBox from Linux.

After a long time i needed to send a fax urgently. I used FritzFax on Windows earlier but was not aware of a solution for linux. I found a piece of software called “Roger Router” (German). Since I still have a FritzBox 5490 (fiber) as internet router I decided to give it a try. Some settings in the FritzBox are neccessary, but this is descibed in the link and can be done via a connected phone.

On Linux Mint Roger Router it is available via software manager. Installation worked without problems. One requirement is to add a printer named “Roger-Router-Fax”. The below proposed command failed as no generic.ppg was available on my installation.

lpadmin -p Roger-Router-Fax -m drv:///sample.drv/generic.ppd -v socket://localhost:9100/ -E -o PageSize=A4

My solution was to install a printer via cups interface, typically available via http://localhost:631/. I added a local printer (HP Printer (HPLIP), then selecting a generic post script driver) with the same settings as given in the command above.

After that, while Roger Router is running, it was possible to fax a document by printing it, using the printer Roger-Router-Fax. A popup appears to enter the phone / fax number. In the settings of Roger Router you can define a path in which the fax journal will be saved.
